Angela was hit
by a car on the freeway and dragged. After being
at the shelter for 2 weeks without pain medication, we
received a call that they were going to kill her unless
someone adopted her. The vet at the shelter
thought the leg would have to be amputated. ARV
adopted her and took her to an orthopedic specialist who
saved the leg. Prior to the surgery when X-rays
were taken, they revealed that not only did she have a
previous break, probably from being hit by another car,
but that she was probably being used as target
practice........she has buck shot all over her body.
Even after these horrible 3 years of the beginning of
her life, she is so incredibly sweet and lets us
medicate her. The vets are even surprised how
sweet she is. |

Orleans was
only 3 weeks old when she was found alone and scared in
a dumpster here in Simi Valley in August 2005. A concerned
citizen brought her to Valley Vet. They contacted us to
see if we could take her. After we got her, we found out
she had 2 different kinds of intestinal parasites and
ring worn. She was treated with medication and is doing
fine. She is almost ready to find the perfect family that
would like to adopt her. Her foster mom named her "Orleans"
because she was found during hurricane Katrina. She is
a true survivor. |

| Holly |

Holly was dropped
off at the East Valley shelter pregnant and scared. Holly
was thrown into a regular kennel without heat or blankets
to keep her warm. There she developed kennel cough. She
delivered her puppies shortly after on the cold hard floor
in the kennel. We rescued Holly on Christmas Eve along
with her 8 puppies and took her to one of our foster homes.
Holly was so skinny and weak, she could barely stand.
With the terrible condition she was in, she was unable
to produce enough milk to feed her puppies. Some of our
volunteers took over the job of bottle feeding the puppies
every 4 hours. A few days after she came home with us,
she and her puppies were having a hard time breathing.
Holly and her puppies were rushed to the vet emergency
hospital and it was discovered that they had pneumonia.
All efforts were given to save these precious puppies,
but three of the puppies did not make it. The remaining
5 puppies and mommy had to stay at the emergency hospital
under 24 hour with the puppies an oxygen incubator. Holly
and her puppies were finally able to come home yesterday
after spending 5 days in the hospital. They are doing
ok, but require 24 hour care for the next 6 days. The
babies still require bottle feeding and helping them nurse
from mommy every 3 hours or so. Medication for Holly and
puppies is needed twice a day and nebuliation every 6
hours for ten minutes (put them in the chamber), then
tap their chests once you take them out. This is hard
and time consuming work, but our volunteers are dedicated
to helping our very special friends live the life they
deserve. Donations are what allow us to help innocent
and helpless animals like Holly get a second chance at
love. |
